Kinder Rituals to Honour Ourselves

Being Kinder to Yourself in 2025: The Power of Small Daily Rituals

As we step into a new year, many of us find ourselves reflecting on ways we can improve our lives—big dreams, bold resolutions, and grand plans. But in the midst of the hustle, we often forget one important thing: being kind to ourselves. Building kinder rituals to honour ourselves, in a world that demands more of us every day, we often push our own well-being to the back burner.

2025 can be the year we change that. This year, let’s focus on embracing slowness, practicing kindness (both to ourselves and others), and nourishing our bodies and spirits. The beauty of these intentions is that they don’t require monumental changes; instead, they begin with small, intentional actions. Simple rituals like speaking kindly to ourselves, nurturing our bodies, and allowing our spirits to rest can have profound effects on our well-being.

One of the most accessible and transformative ways to start is by integrating aromatherapy into your daily routine. It's a simple, easy way to invite healing and self-care into your day—and it all begins with a single breath.

The Slow Ritual of Aromatherapy: Nourishing Body and Spirit

In 2025, let's be intentional about the ways we care for ourselves—by slowing down, being present, and creating space for peace. Aromatherapy, especially through essential oils and carefully curated diffuser blends, can serve as an incredibly grounding ritual. It’s a practice that encourages mindfulness, invites relaxation, and allows you to be more connected to the present moment.

When used thoughtfully, essential oils have the power to uplift your spirit, calm your mind, and nurture your body. From the soothing notes of lavender to the earthy warmth of cedarwood, each oil offers unique benefits that can complement your daily journey toward self-care.

How to Incorporate Aromatherapy Into Your Day

Create a Morning Ritual with Essential Oils: Start your day with intention. Before you jump into your daily tasks, take a moment to breathe deeply and center yourself. Using essential oils in a diffuser can help create a calm and peaceful environment that sets the tone for the day ahead. For a morning boost, try uplifting scents like peppermint or lemon to energize your senses and clear any mental fog. If you need a more grounding start, consider oils like cedarwood or frankincense to promote feelings of balance and calm.

Make Your Tea Time a Sacred Moment: A cup of tea is often our pause during the day. But why not turn this moment into a small, sacred ritual of self-care? Add essential oils to your routine by diffusing calming blends or even infusing them in a steaming cup of tea. Look for blends like chamomile and lavender, which have long been known to promote relaxation and reduce stress. Think of this as a way to nourish your body, mind, and spirit all at once.

Speak Kindly to Yourself: One of the most powerful rituals of self-care you can practice in 2025 is kindness—not just toward others, but toward yourself. Our internal dialogue often gets lost in the chaos of the day, and we can be quick to judge or criticize ourselves. This year, focus on speaking to yourself with love and understanding. Whether it’s acknowledging your efforts, affirming your worth, or simply offering a word of encouragement, positive self-talk is one of the simplest yet most powerful acts of self-care. Aromatherapy can support this practice—choose calming and soothing oils like bergamot or western red cedar to create a serene environment as you engage in these moments of self-reflection.

Be Present with Each Breath: It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of responsibilities, but one of the easiest ways to slow down is to focus on your breath. Aromatherapy can help you create a mindful space for deep breathing. Diffuse essential oils like lavender,  eucalyptus, or rose to encourage relaxation and clarity. As you inhale the calming scent, take a few deep breaths and feel the tension melt away. This practice helps you stay present in the moment and reconnect with your inner peace.

Evening Wind Down:  As the day comes to a close, it’s essential to allow your body and mind to unwind and let go of the stress and worries of the day. A warm bath with bath salts infused with essential oils like cedarwood, lavender , or chamomile can provide the perfect ending to your day. As you soak, let the healing power of these oils relax your muscles, calm your mind, and prepare your body for rest. This is your time to release tension and nourish your spirit before bed.

When we talk about being kinder to ourselves, it’s often easy to think that we need big, dramatic changes. In moments when I feel the need for 'big changes' I reflect to the moment of registering for a 250km bike race from Vancouver, British Columbia to Seattle, Washington. Instead, I am reminding myself the same distance can be made by walking an extra 10km each week over a 6 month period. Therein reality, it’s the small actions—the tiny rituals—that make all the difference. It’s the quiet moments of self-reflection, the comforting scent of an essential oil, or the intentional act of slowing down that create lasting change in how we feel and move through the world. It's the first sip of coffee and savouring silence in the moments before my children (or your children) rise and begin marching to take on the world.

In 2025, let’s practice kindness in its simplest form: in how we speak to ourselves, in the rituals we create for our health and well-being, and in the way we nourish our spirits with love and care. Every small, intentional action builds toward a more mindful and balanced life. So, take a breath, light a candle, diffuse your favorite essential oil blend, and remember—slowness, kindness, and self-care are gifts you can give yourself every single day.
